Filmmaker extradordinaire Anurag Kashyap has himself acknowledged that people call him controversial and a rabble-rouser. While he doesn’t actively go seeking for controversy, he always does seem to find himself in the middle of one. Whether it’s a tweet he’s sent out or a movie he’s made, Anurag Kashyap is controversy’ favourite child. On his birthday, we share a few instances that prove the same.
Anurag Kashyap’s brother, Abhinav, had a major fallout with Arbaaz Khan. Anurag jumped into the fire by tweeting: “Salman Khan thinks he made my brother’s life, hope he does the same for Arbaaz when he does Dabangg 2″. Arbaaz replied that Salman had already done it with Dabangg.
Everybody knows that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black was a wonderfully made film. However, Anurag Kashyap disliked it so much that he even wrote an article criticising it. Amitabh Bachchan, the lead actor, did not speak to Anurag Kashyap for 14 years.
Anurag and Karan Johar were famously at war with each other. Anurag was the poster child of the indie circuit while Karan Johar was the mainstream mogul. Anurag had even called Koffee With Karan a crappy show while Karan had said that Anurag needs a psychiatrist.
Anurag Kashyap was one of the first industry insiders to criticise the once great Ram Gopal Varma. He even said that RGV had lost the plot when he made Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. RGV got his chance to do the same when Bombay Velvet flopped.
When actor Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide, Anurag Kashyap was one of the first to come forward and say that SSR was given many chances to prove himself in Bollywood but that he was “too problematic”. He also shared a chat with Sushant’s manager where he said that Sushant had agreed to do his film and then ghosted him. “Everybody baying for Rhea’s blood, asking questions like how did you know she didn’t do this or that to him? How do you what was he going through? Are forgetting that the whole industry has actually known and seen and interacted with SSR over last 9-10 years. Yes we know better,” he had also written.
“And that is also the reason the whole industry has been quiet so far out of respect for him. And now it is that very knowledge of SSR that has again brought everyone out here together to stand in solidarity for Rhea because it’s gone too far,” he added.
