Quite like the Grammy Awards that were held earlier this year, the 93rd Academy Awards was filled with many history-making moments. For the first time in Oscars history, two women were nominated for Best Director with the award going to Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, making her the first Asian American woman to win the coveted award and also the second woman in Oscars history to win Best Director after Kathryn Bigelow in 2010.

Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was a clear favourite in many categories with both Davis and Boseman being praised for their turn in the movie based on blues queen, Ma Rainey. The hair and makeup team behind Davis’ look won the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, making them the first Black stylists in Oscars history to win the award.

Riz Ahmed was nominated in the Best Actor category for Sound of Metal and made an appearance on the red carpet in an all-black Prada suit alongside his wife, Fatima Farheen Mirza who stunned in a turquoise gown. Ahmed set Twitter abuzz when he stopped the paps to fix Fatima’s hair on the red carpet and jokingly stated that he was the “official groomer”. The video of the moment quickly went viral on social media.

India’s very own Irrfan Khan and Bhanu Athaiya were honoured with a mention in the In Memoriam segment. Khan had shared his skills in many films across the globe and Athaiya was the first Indian to win an Oscar. She took home the coveted award for Costume Design for Gandhi.

Ann Roth became the oldest woman to win an Oscar as she took home the Best Costume Design for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Anthony Hopkins became the oldest man to win an Oscar. He won the Best Actor award for The Father in a major upset which caused a stir on social media with many claiming that Chadwick Boseman should have been posthumously awarded. Yuh-Jung Youn became the first Korean to win an Oscar for Minari, a year after Parasite was honoured with Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards.
