Team India enter the 2022 T20 World Cup as the number-one ranked side in the world and one of the favourites to lift the trophy alongside Australia and England. After their disappointing exit from the last World Cup in the UAE, Rohit Sharma’s side have played a positive brand of cricket under their new captain and coach, Rahul Dravid. However, the Men in Blue suffered a disappointing exit at the Asia Cup in the UAE and are heading into the World Cup without their premier pacer in Jasprit Bumrah.

India also haven’t won an ICC trophy in nearly a decade and will be looking to claim their first T20 World Cup title since the inaugural edition in South Africa in 2007.

The Indian cricket team arguably has the batting line-up most suited to the Australian conditions among all nations at this T20 World Cup. The top three of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli are all excellent players of pace bowling and the short ball, and crucially have plenty of runs under their belt heading into the marquee tournament. Suryakumar Yadav is the highest run-scorer in T20I cricket in 2022 and is the glue that holds the batting line-up together at number four.

In the middle order, Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik are two of the best finishers in world cricket with their ability to smash the fast bowlers at the death and are both entering the tournament in thunderous form. Since the last World Cup in the UAE, team India have been the second-fastest scoring side in the world, and Rohit Sharma’s side has the personnel available to play this ultra-aggressive approach in Australia.

India’s bowling problems were highlighted at the Asia Cup in the UAE last month, and the absence of Jasprit Bumrah has exacerbated this issue at the T20 World Cup. The form of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshal Patel have been worrying heading into the tournament, and Rohit Sharma almost has no reliable option he can turn to at the death.

The biggest concern for team India is that none of their pacers possess the ball speed or bounce that can exploit the conditions in Australia. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel will be less effective on flat batting tracks in Australia due to the lack of seam movement or grip in the surfaces, making India’s bowling attack one-dimensional without Jasprit Bumrah.

Most important player – Suryakumar Yadav

If India are to win the 2022 T20 World Cup, it is their batting that will take them to the title. One man likely to play a major role in that line-up is the best T20 batter on the planet – Suryakumar Yadav. The Mumbai Indians star has enjoyed tremendous success in his short T20I career, averaging 41 at a strike rate of 177. Yadav’s capacity to play shots to all parts of the ground from ball one makes him one of the toughest batters to bowl to in world cricket. His ability to take on the spinners and maintain Team India’s scoring rate through the middle could define the Men in Blue’s success at the World Cup.
