From India’s historic first-ever victory in the Test arena to the mouth-watering clash between James Anderson and Virat Kohli, there have been plenty of memorable moments between India and England in the longest format of the game. This epic rivalry has lasted decades, and with the two cricketing heavyweights set to meet again this month, we look back at the five most memorable Test matches between India and England.

5. 1952 Madras Test
20 years after first playing their first-ever Test match, India secured their maiden Test victory in 1952 against England in Madras. India bowled out the visitors for 266 in the first innings thanks to an outstanding 8-wicket haul from Vinoo Mankad before putting up a mammoth total of 457 after centuries from Pankaj Roy and the legendary Polly Umrigar. In reply, England succumbed to 183 all-out, with Mankad adding another 4-wickets to his name as India secured their historic first test victory by an innings and eight runs.
4. 2012 Mumbai Test
The 2012 Test between India and England in Mumbai will be remembered for one of the best innings in Test cricket history from Kevin Pietersen. Trailing 1-0 in the series, India put on an excellent 1st innings total of 327 on a raging turner at the Wankhede before KP set the stage alight with an astonishing 186. Pietersen deposited the Indian spin trio of Ojha, Harbhajan and Ashwin to all parts of the ground to give England an 86-run lead before Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann ran through the Indian batting lineup to level the series.
3. 2018 Edgbaston Test
The Virat Kohli-James Anderson rivalry resumed at Edgbaston in 2018, with Kohli undoing the horrors of 2014 with an unbelievable 149 in the 2nd innings to single-handedly keep India in the contest on a green top. Ishant Sharma’s 5-wicket haul in the 3rd innings gave India a 194-run target to go 1-0 up in the series, but despite Kohli’s half-century, the Men in Blue eventually fell 32 runs short thanks to some inspired bowling from Ben Stokes and James Anderson on day five.
2. 2021 Pink Ball Test
One of the most memorable encounters between the two nations came just five months ago at Ahmedabad in the momentous pink ball test. England were skittled out for 112 in the first innings after an Axar Patel 6-wicket haul, but the visitors returned the favour to dismiss India for only 145 after England captain Joe Root astonishingly picked up a fifer in just 6 overs. The carnage didn’t stop there though as England outdid themselves in the third innings and were dismissed for only 81 runs, with India wrapping up the Test match victory after only two days of cricket.
1. 2008 Chennai Test
No Test match elicited as much emotion as India’s fabled win over England at Chennai in 2008. Just weeks after the horrific 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India took the field against England at Chepauk. The visitors took a 75-run first-innings lead and set India a mammoth 386-run target after twin tons from Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood in the third innings, but India chased down the total thanks to an extraordinary unbeaten century from Sachin Tendulkar, which the Master Blaster described as the most meaningful innings of his career.
