There is just one matchday left in the English Premier League ahead of the break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and here are the biggest talking points in FPL ahead of GW16.

Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 16 Preview – Best Team & Captain

Transfer Tip

Buy Leandro Trossard

With just one week to go in FPL before the World Cup break, all transfers for Fantasy Premier League managers should be geared towards maximising the points for GW16. This short-term thinking allows for more risk-taking in fantasy football due to the lack of long-term consequences of a poor decision.

Fantasy Premier League managers managers should look at teams that have a strong game in GW16 – preferably at home – against lower-league opposition. Targeting players from Bournemouth at home to Everton, Tottenham at home to Leeds, or Liverpool at home to Southampton are all excellent options for GW16. However, the one player who could be the most explosive pick in FPL for this week is Leandro Trossard. The Brighton midfielder has been playing up front as a striker for Roberto de Zerbi’s side off late and has two goals and an assist in his last three fixtures.

The Belgian also has excellent underlying numbers for the Seagulls this season and shifting from the likes of Saka or Foden – who may not start – to Trossard in GW16 may be a risky but high-upside punt for this week.

Differential Watchlist

Ivan Perisic (5.5m)

With Son Heung-Min and Richarlison injured, Tottenham have been forced to field Ivan Perisic as part of the front two or three alongside Harry Kane. This temporary change in position is a massive opportunity for FPL managers due to the Croatian being listed as a defender in the game. Perisic’s attacking potential increases exponentially when playing up front, and this improved involvement in the offence was evident when Tottenham played Liverpool last weekend. As part of the front two with Harry Kane, the Croatian struck the bar on two occasions and was also on most of the set-piece duty.

In GW16, Tottenham have an excellent fixture against Leeds United at home, a game which could suit Antonio Conte’s side due to the high press employed by Jesse Marsch’s side, and the space they leave in behind. Perisic could feast on the left wing alongside Kane and Kulusevski, and his attacking output and clean sheet potential make him one of the best differentials for Fantasy Premier League managers before the World Cup break.

Best Captain

NPxGi per 90

Haaland (12.1 m)

Brentford (H)

De Bruyne (12.5 m)

Brentford (H)

Salah (12.7 m)

Southampton (H)

Kane (11.6 m)

Leicester City (H)

Without sounding like a broken record, Erling Haaland is once again the best captaincy option in FPL for GW16. The Norwegian has scored 18 league goals in 13 appearances and is taking on a Brentford team at home this weekend who have conceded seven goals in their last three league games and just got knocked out of the League Cup by League Two side Gillingham.

However, the dilemma with Erling Haaland for FPL managers in GW16 is his fitness. The striker managed just 26 minutes for Manchester City against Fulham last weekend and could be on the bench for the Cityzens again this weekend, with Guardiola not wanting to aggravate his ankle injury and place further damage on his ligaments.

If Haaland is doubtful for the full 90, other attractive FPL captaincy options include Kevin de Bruyne, Harry Kane, and Mohamed Salah, who got back to his scoring best against Tottenham over GW15 and plays a managerless Southampton at home in the final matchday before the World Cup.

Shivaan’s FPL Team Selection for GW16: No transfer, Erling Haaland captain

FPL Gameweek 16

With just one matchday before a 50-day break for the World Cup, there aren’t too many changes needed for my FPL team. Most of my players have favourable fixtures this week, and with no money in the bank, it is difficult to find upgrades without taking a -4.

The only possible transfers in my mind are removing Haaland for Nunez if the news comes out that he doesn’t start or subbing in Ben White for Lewis Dunk for Arsenal’s away trip to Wolves. The Gunners have an excellent defensive record away from home this season, while Wolves are still managerless and are looking toothless in front of goal without a single fit or recognised striker at the club.

As for the captaincy, Erling Haaland gets the armband for my FPL team. Best of luck for Gameweek 16!
