The Money in the Bank PPV is set to return on the 18th of July at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth Texas, which will be the PPV’s 12th edition.
The Money in the Bank ladder match first made its appearance back at WrestleMania 21 where Edge became the first man to win the briefcase which contained a contract for a title match. Since 2010, the match itself evolved into its own pay-per-view and the event has been held every year ever since. Here’s a look at the top 5 moments of WWE’s Money In The Bank PPV.
1. Kane cashes in at the PPV itself, 2010
Back in 2010, Kane won the Money in the Bank ladder match which earned him a contract for the title fight. Kane didn’t waste any time using that contract as he cashed it in on Rey Mysterio the same night after Mysterio had successfully defended his title against Jack Swagger. This win for the Demon set the tone for a number of fighters who decided to cash in on the same night, like Alexa Bliss and Dean Ambrose.
2. Ziggler’s briefcase claim, 2012
The 2012 Money in the Bank PPV got off to a flying start. The PPV opened up with the Money In the Bank ladder match for the WWE Championship contract which involved fighters like Damien Sandow Tensai, Christian, Santino Marella, Tyson Kidd, Coady Rhodes, Sin Cara, and Dolph Ziggler. All the fighters had their moments in the fight but it all came down to Christian and Dolph Ziggler. Christian attempted to go for the briefcase but Ziggler pushed him off the ladder, taking out Christian to get his hands on the briefcase. He went on to win the title when he cashed in against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania 29.
3. Cena become a double champion, 2012
This title match featured WWE stars like Kane, Roman Reigns, Randy Orton, John Cena, Sheamus, Cesaro, Bray Wyatt and Alberto Del Rio for the vacant WWE Heavyweight title. The fight was completely open with all eight fighters performing their finishing moves. During the final stages of the fight, Reigns and Orton went head-to-head but Kane intervened with a Chokeslam which put Reigns to sleep, but the demon was then taken out by Orton. For a moment it looked like Orton was about to take the belt home but John Cena fought his way back and landed an Attitude Adjustment on Orton onto Kane and climbed up the ladder to get his hands on the WWE Championship belt.
4. Shielding the WWE Title, 2016
The 2016 Money In the Bank had it’s own twists and turns. Earlier that night, Dean Ambrose won the Money in the Bank contract which ensured him a title fight at any point. The main event at the PPV featured Roman Reigns defending his title against his former Shield teammate Seth Rollins and it was Rollins who went on to defeat Reigns to become the world champion and the third shield member. Dean Ambrose cashed in his contract right away to spoil the party for Seth Rollins and with Rollins already tired from fighting Reigns, it took Ambrose just minutes to seal the victory and become the WWE champion. This meant that all three shield members held the WWE title on the same night.
5. CM Punk VS John Cena, 2011 Money in the Bank
Back in 2011 MITB, John Cena’s place in WWE was at stake when he faced CM Punk for the WWE Title. This fight went on for almost an hour with Punk performing his GTS finisher which put Cena into real trouble. McMahon and John Laurinaitis got ringside to distracted CM Punk and Cena then took full advantage of this opportunity to lock in the STFU submission. Before Punk would tapout, McMahon indicated to the referee to ring the bell and declare Cena the winner. Cena, who didn’t want to win the fight that way, got furious at Laurinaitis and started attacking him. After that, while Cena was returning to the ring, Punk performed another GTS on Cena which did the job for him. The WWE Chairman then ordered Alberto Del Rio to cash in his contract and take the title away from Punk! Punk however, landed a roundhouse kick on Del Rio which finished the fight and that end to the fight still remains as our top Money In The Bank moment as we saw Punk blowing a kiss towards Vince McMahone before leaving the arena as WWE Champion.
