Over the years, the Royal Rumble PPV has provided wrestling fans with many memorable moments since its inception back in 1988. The pay-per-view is also seen as a first step on the road to WrestleMania and if you are a WWE fan, then you most certainly are a big fan of Royal Rumble. With the iconic event just a few weeks away, let’s take a quick look at some of the most unforgettable moments in Royal Rumble history.
10. Santino Marella sent back within seconds, Royal Rumble 2009
The 2009 Royal Rumble saw one of the funniest moments in WWE involving Italian wrestler Santino Marella. Marella entered the Rumble at #28 and was calmly walking towards the ring while engaging with the crowd. As soon as he entered the ring, Kane eliminated him with a clothesline after just 1.9 seconds, which broke The Warlord’s record for the shortest Royal Rumble appearance (2 seconds).
9. Maven eliminates The Undertaker, Royal Rumble 2002
At #9, we have one of the most surprising eliminations of Royal Rumble history. In the 2002 Royal Rumble, Undertake and Triple H were going toe-to-toe and in the end, Undertaker got the better of his opponent and eliminated him. Maven, who was a rookie back then capitalized on the situation with a dropkick on the back of the veteran sending him all the way to the floor as fans were left stunned.
8. Too Cool and Rikishi dance takeover, Royal Rumble 2000
Back in the 2000 Royal Rumble match, Rikishi was left with his Too Cool brethren and the trio decided to take a moment and amazed the crowd with some dance moves. The MSG arena went wild as they never saw anything like that in a wrestling match ever. After dancing for a while, Rikishi then went on to do a solo performance pointing towards his rival the Rock.
7. Belair winning the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble, Royal Rumble 2021
Before the 2021 Royal Rumble, no one knew who Bianca Belair was. Belair entered at #3 and showed a heart of a lion as she fought all the way till the end to win the match and book her title shot at WrestleMania. Belair made three eliminations and was left in the ring with Rhea Ripley in the end. The two came close to eliminating the other but in the end, it was Belair who put Ripley over the ropes and out to win the 2021 Royal Rumble.
6. Kane chokeslams Sabu, Royal Rumble 2007
In the 2007 Royal Rumble match, Sabu brought a table with him which he had placed right outside the ring. It was right there that people knew someone was going through that table and little did they know that it was going to be Sabu himself. Kane and Sabu were sharing heavy blows before Kane picked up Sabu and choke slammed him on the table, eliminating the ECW original. This elimination has to go down as one of the best eliminations in Royal Rumble history.
5. An Ice Cold win for Steve Austin, Royal Rumble 1997
Up next, we have the 1997 Royal Rumble match in which Stone Cold Steve Austin produced a masterclass. A brawl started outside the ring that distracted the referees and no one saw Austin being eliminated. Meanwhile, Vader & Undertaker went head-to-head and Hart began fighting with Diesel. Austin saw a window of opportunity and re-entered dumping both Vader and Undertaker out while Hart eliminated Diesel. Hart thought he won the match and started celebrating before Austin came in from behind and toss him over the top rope to win the match.
4. The Rock returns to save Roman Reigns, Royal Rumble 2015
The crowd goes wild every time Dwayne Johnson makes a return to WWE and that was the case back in 2015. In the Royal Rumble match, Roman Reigns eliminated Kane and Big Show together, and out of anger, the two reentered the ring and started beating up the Head of the Table and that’s when the catchphrase – If you smell what the Rock is cooking? Echoed around the arena and the crowd went wild. The Rock beat up Kane and Big Show landing his iconic People’s Elbow and Rock Bottom.
3. Pancakes save the day for Kofi Kingston, Royal Rumble 2018
Kofi Kingston is famous for his different ways of surviving in a Royal Rumble match but this one stands out as Kingston used a plate of pancakes to renter the ring. Jinder Mahal tried to eliminate Kofi and was even successful in sending him over the top rope but Kofi was saved by his teammate Xavier Woods as he landed straight on his chest. New Day teammate, Big E then brought a pancake and placed it below Kofi’s leg for him to make his way back into the fight.
2. The return of Edge, Royal Rumble 2020
Almost no one in the entire arena could have anticipated what took place in the 2020 Royal Rumble match. As the countdown began for entrant #21, there was a lot going on inside the ring but everything stopped as the count reached 0. The lights went off for a split second and then the music hit “You think you know me” and the crowd went bonkers as the Rated R Superstar made his way towards the ring after nine years.
1. The 3 faces of Foley, Royal Rumble 1998
Like we said before, the Royal Rumble creates some incredible moments every year and one of the most iconic ones came 23 years ago. In the 1998 Royal Rumble match, there were just 28 fighters as Mick Foley entered the match three times. First, he entered at #1 as Cactus Jack lasting for nine minutes. Then, Foley returned into the ring as Mankind at #16 and was soon eliminated by Goldberg. Finally, he returned as Dudle Love in #28 and still got eliminated.
